Highlights

First held in 1960 and won by the USSR, the European Championship has changed considerably throughout its history. Only four teams took part in the finals during the early editions, a format expanded to eight in 1980, then sixteen in 1996 and finally twenty-four since 2016, opening the tournament up to a greater number of nations.

Spain has established itself as the competition's most successful nation, with four titles, three of them won in 2008, 2012 and 2024, marking a decade of dominance built on possession-based football. Germany follows with three titles, won between 1972 and 1996.

The tournament has also produced several remarkable upsets: Denmark, called up at the last minute after Yugoslavia's disqualification, won against all odds in 1992, while Greece pulled off one of the greatest achievements in football history in 2004, beating host nation Portugal both in the opening match and in the final. Portugal took their revenge in 2016, winning on home soil despite Cristiano Ronaldo being forced off injured early in the final.
