The 1982 World Cup, held in Spain, was the first to feature 24 teams. The first round had several notable moments: Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1, a record score at the finals, and Algeria caused a sensation by defeating West Germany 2-1. The Algerians were nevertheless eliminated after the Germans' 1-0 win over Austria, a result that sent both teams through. Since then, the final matches in each group have been played simultaneously.

Italy, who qualified without winning a single first-round match, then came to life through Paolo Rossi, back from a two-year suspension. Goalless until then, the striker scored a hat-trick against the Brazil of Zico and Sócrates (3-2), then both goals against Poland in the semi-final. The other semi-final, in Seville, saw West Germany come back against France, who had led 3-1 in extra time, in the first penalty shoot-out in the tournament's history.

In the final in Madrid, Italy won 3-1 with goals from Rossi, Marco Tardelli and Alessandro Altobelli. Rossi finished as top scorer with six goals, and goalkeeper and captain Dino Zoff lifted the trophy at the age of 40.
