The 2002 World Cup was the first to be held in Asia and the first to be co-hosted, by South Korea and Japan. It began with a huge upset: France, the reigning world and European champions, lost 1-0 to Senegal in the opening match and went out in the first round without scoring a single goal. Argentina, another of the favourites, also fell at the group stage.

The outsiders went far. Senegal reached the quarter-finals on their debut. South Korea, roared on by their home crowd, knocked out Italy with a golden goal and then Spain on penalties, in matches marred by disputed refereeing decisions, to become the first Asian team to reach the semi-finals. Turkey finished third, Hakan Şükür scoring the fastest goal in the tournament's history in the third-place match, after eleven seconds.

Brazil won all seven of their matches. In the final in Yokohama, the first ever World Cup meeting between Brazil and Germany, Ronaldo scored twice (2-0) and finished as top scorer with eight goals, four years after his troubled final of 1998. The Brazilians claimed a record fifth title.
