History and rules

Created in 2018 by the French magazine France Football, the Ballon d'Or Féminin is awarded every year to the best female player in the world, as voted by a panel of journalists. Norway's Ada Hegerberg was its first winner.

It was not awarded in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2022 it has rewarded the previous season (August to July) rather than the calendar year. The men's Ballon d'Or has been awarded since 1956.
