Highlights

Held in Switzerland, the 1954 World Cup is the highest-scoring in history: 140 goals were scored in 26 matches, more than five per game, an average that has never been matched. The quarter-final between Austria and Switzerland (7-5) remains the highest-scoring match the tournament has ever seen. It was also the first edition to have matches broadcast on television.

Ferenc Puskás's Hungary, Olympic champions and unbeaten for four years, were the overwhelming favourites. They thrashed West Germany 8-3 in the first round, then saw off Brazil and holders Uruguay by the same 4-2 scoreline. Their forward Sándor Kocsis finished as top scorer with eleven goals.

In the final in Bern, played in the rain, the Hungarians led 2-0 after eight minutes. West Germany nevertheless drew level through Max Morlock and Helmut Rahn, who scored the winner (3-2) six minutes from time. Germany's first world title is remembered as the "Miracle of Bern".
