Highlights
The 1958 World Cup, held in Sweden, introduced the world to a 17-year-old Brazilian forward: Pelé. He scored the winner against Wales in the quarter-finals, a hat-trick against France in the semi-finals and two more in the final, becoming the youngest world champion in history. It is the only edition in which all four British national teams took part.
France's Just Fontaine scored thirteen goals in six matches, a record for a single tournament that still stands. Led by Raymond Kopa, France reached the semi-finals for the first time and finished third after a 6-3 win over holders West Germany, in which Fontaine scored four.
In the final in Solna, Sweden took the lead in the opening minutes, but the Brazil of Garrincha, Didi and Vavá ran out comfortable winners (5-2). The Brazilians claimed their first world title and remain the only non-European side to have won the trophy on European soil.
